Overview

The Diner is a kitchen-themed floor with red outer walls featuring green stripes, red or green inner walls, and a brown wooden floor matching that of the Rainbow Rooms. Kitchen areas have gray tiles. There are many windows separating different areas of the map, creating visual sightlines between rooms while still restricting movement to doorways. The kitchen and dining sides are on separated sides of the diner for each variant, giving each variant a distinct layout feel.

Decor throughout the Diner includes two styles of menus featuring foods that represent different Toons. One menu shows foods for Astro, Cosmo, Razzle & Dazzle, and Toodles, while a second menu features Goob, Dandy, Vee, and Shrimpo. A dining section poster also features Sprout and Cosmo. Vending machines featuring Poppy and cans of Poppy Pop appear in both blue and red color variants across the floor. A cereal box labeled "Basic Flakes" with the tagline "100% Boring" can also be spotted. Jukeboxes are present in some areas, and their lights shut off during Blackout floor events.

The Diner has an ambient soundscape featuring an eerie audio track that plays randomly throughout the floor. This sound (SCP Ambient9) is played at a reduced playback speed of 0.6 in-game, creating a slower, more unsettling atmosphere compared to its original pitch.

Variant Layouts

All three Diner variants separate the kitchen and dining areas onto opposite sides, but each arranges rooms differently. Variant 1 is a straightforward layout with clear kitchen and dining sections connected by doorways, and includes a Sprout cutout in a blocked-off corner — one of only a handful of character cutouts found across all floors. Variant 2 features a more complex room structure with a central area, corner rooms, and a multi-room kitchen section that creates more pathways and potential dead ends. Variant 3 features a distinctive red room and different angled approaches, and was the last variant added to the floor type.

Variant History

Variant 3 of the Diner map was added in v0.5.1. For a short time after release, this variant could spawn before Floor 5, but this was quickly patched. It was one of the rarest Floors in the game due to using the spawn patterns of the Rainbow Rooms despite only spawning on Floor 5+. This bug was fixed when Variant 3 had a layout expansion during the Blot Update (v0.9.1).

In the Dyle/Brusha Update (v0.11.1) and the final optimizations update (v0.15.1), Diner 3 was briefly set to use the Rainbow Room spawn pattern again — allowing it to spawn on Floor 1 — but this was fixed shortly after each update. This recurring spawn-pattern bug across multiple updates made Variant 3 notable in the community as a floor with a particularly turbulent development history.

Strategies

The Diner's split between kitchen and dining sections means players must cross between two distinct halves of the map when completing Machines. Because windows separate many areas, you can often see Twisteds approaching before they reach you — use this visual information to plan escape routes through doorways rather than running into a dead end.

The kitchen side tends to have tighter corridors and gray-tiled areas where Machines can be placed in relatively confined spaces. When working on kitchen-side Machines, keep mental note of the nearest doorway back to the dining area, as the open dining section usually provides more room to maneuver. Conversely, the dining side offers more space but fewer obstacles to break line of sight, making ranged Twisteds like Twisted Goob more dangerous there.

During Blackout events, the Diner becomes notably harder to navigate because the jukebox and vending machine lights that normally serve as visual landmarks shut off. Familiarizing yourself with each variant's layout beforehand is especially important on this floor since losing those ambient light cues can make the kitchen corridors disorienting.

Trivia

Several notable details are documented about the Diner floor type.

  • The lights on some vending machines and jukeboxes in the kitchen map will shut off in Blackouts, removing useful visual landmarks.
  • Two different menu boards can be seen throughout the Diner. One features foods representing Astro, Cosmo, Razzle & Dazzle, and Toodles, while the other shows Goob, Dandy, Vee, and Shrimpo.
  • A dining section poster in the Diner also features Sprout and Cosmo, separate from the main menu boards.
  • Poppy Pop vending machines appear in both blue and red color variants across the Diner, and a cereal box labeled "Basic Flakes — 100% Boring" can also be spotted as background decor.
  • Variant 3 was added in v0.5.1, and for a short time after release, could spawn before Floor 5. Its spawn-pattern bug resurfaced in both v0.11.1 and v0.15.1 before being patched each time.
  • After Variant 3 got a rework in the Blot Update, a red placeholder square could briefly appear in the Elevator before vanishing seconds before the doors open. This has since been removed, but it has seemingly moved to Shelly's Floor.
  • Qwel noted this floor type was lightly related to Sprout, but after Sprout's Floor released in v0.11.1, the Diner is no longer the most closely related floor to him.
  • In Variant 1 of the Diner, there is a Sprout cutout in a blocked-off corner, similar to the Dandy cutouts found in 6 different Floors across the game.
  • The Diner's ambient sound uses an audio track (SCP Ambient9) played at 0.6x speed in-game, giving it a deeper, slower tone than its original source.
