Dandy's World Research Capsules Guide
Research Capsules are collectibles found on every floor of Dandy's World. Each capsule grants 1% Research on the Twisted it belongs to, along with two Ichor. They are client-sided, so every player can collect each capsule independently.
| Reward per capsule | 1% Research on associated Twisted + 2 Ichor |
|---|---|
| Capsules per Twisted | 2 capsules per Twisted type on the floor |
| Rodger bonus | Research doubled when collected by Rodger (does not always apply) |
| Server behaviour | Client-sided — all players can collect the same capsule |
| Twisted Rodger fake | One fake capsule per floor; lacks video film in the middle |
How Research Capsules Work
Research Capsules appear as small metallic tanks partially filled with Ichor. Each capsule has a metal ring around the middle, video film wrapped around the body, and a red round wheel (valve) on one side resembling those found on Machines. They always appear full when spawned.
Two capsules spawn per Twisted type present on the floor, so the total number of capsules scales directly with how many different Twisted types are active. For example, a floor with three distinct Twisted types will have six capsules scattered across it. Each capsule is tied to a specific Twisted and grants 1% Research toward that Twisted along with 2 Ichor upon collection. Players using Rodger receive doubled Research from capsules, though this bonus does not always apply.
Pickup is client-sided, meaning the capsule remains visible and collectible for all players even after one person grabs it. This removes competition over capsules entirely — every player in the run can collect every capsule on the floor independently. A short audio cue plays when a capsule is collected, confirming the pickup.
Spotting Twisted Rodger's Fake Capsule
Twisted Rodger disguises himself as a slightly altered Research Capsule. The key visual tell is the absence of video film in the middle — a real capsule has film wrapped around it, while a fake one does not. Only one fake capsule can spawn per floor, and it respawns in the same location after being picked up, so the threat persists throughout the entire floor.
Research Capsules can spawn in piles or even directly on top of each other. This makes bulk-collecting risky when Twisted Rodger is active, because a fake capsule may be hidden among real ones. If you know Twisted Rodger is on the floor, slow down and inspect each capsule individually before grabbing it. Look specifically at the center of the capsule for the presence or absence of film before committing to the pickup.
Why You Should Always Collect Capsules
Even when you have no immediate need for Research or Ichor, collecting capsules is strategically valuable for several reasons.
First, because capsules only spawn for Twisteds currently active on the floor, picking one up immediately tells you which Twisted it belongs to. This functions as an early-warning system — you learn what threats are present before encountering them directly, giving you time to prepare items or adjust your route.
Second, continuously collecting capsules acts as a navigation aid. If you notice a capsule you have not yet picked up, it indicates an area you have not fully explored. This is particularly useful for locating missed objectives, items, or exits on complex floor layouts. For players unfamiliar with a floor's geography, tracking uncollected capsules helps prevent getting turned around.
Finally, the Ichor reward from capsules adds up over the course of a run. Two Ichor per capsule may seem small, but across multiple floors with several Twisted types each, the cumulative gain is meaningful for purchasing items from Machines.
Trivia
- Prior to v0.2, capsules were server-sided, meaning the capsule would not be visible for other players after someone picked it up. The change to client-sided spawning was a significant quality-of-life improvement for multiplayer runs.
- Real and fake capsules can spawn on top of each other — check carefully when Twisted Rodger is on the floor.
- There are always 2 Research Capsules per Twisted type, even if duplicates of that Twisted spawn. Two Twisted Pebbles still only produce two capsules for Pebble.
- In the Ichor Gamepass art, Rodger holds a capsule with a black knob instead of the usual red one, and without Tapes around it — technically making the depicted capsule a fake by in-game standards.
- The red valve on each Research Capsule matches the design of the wheels found on Machines, suggesting a shared manufacturing origin within the game's lore.
- Research Capsules are categorized as Items on the Fandom wiki, even though they function more like environmental collectibles than inventory items.
FAQ
How many Research Capsules spawn per floor?
Two Research Capsules spawn for each Twisted type present on the floor. The total count scales with the number of different Twisted types active, not the total number of individual Twisteds. For instance, two copies of Twisted Pebble still only produce two Pebble capsules.
How do you tell a fake Twisted Rodger capsule from a real one?
A real Research Capsule has video film wrapped around its middle section. Twisted Rodger's fake capsule is missing this film entirely. Only one fake capsule spawns per floor and it respawns in the same spot after pickup, so the threat does not go away once triggered.
Does Rodger's bonus apply to all Research Capsules?
When playing as Rodger, Research gained from capsules is doubled. However, this bonus does not always apply consistently — there are situations where the doubling fails to trigger. Collect capsules with Rodger whenever possible, but do not rely on the bonus for precise Research calculations.
